How X counts characters
X does not count every character as 1. It uses weighted counting. Most Latin letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation count as 1. Each emoji counts as 2, and so do Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters. Every link counts as 23 characters, however long it is, because X wraps links in its own t.co shortener.
That is why a post with a long link can fit when the same words with the link spelled out would not. This counter follows the same rules as X's developer documentation and the open-source twitter-text library.
Character limit by account type
Standard accounts can post up to 280 weighted characters. Premium accounts have a longer limit. The counter here checks the standard 280 limit, which is the one most people write to.
Questions people ask
Why does my post count more than the characters I typed?
Emoji and CJK characters count as 2 each, and a link counts as 23 characters no matter how long it is. The counter shows the weighted total, which is the number X checks against 280.
How many characters does a link use on X?
Every link counts as 23 characters. X replaces it with a short t.co link, so a short link and a very long one cost the same.
Does this counter post anything or save my text?
No. The counter runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or stored.
